New kumiko arrangements depend on the type and color of the wood being used. The different patterns possible also contribute to the wide variety of arrangements. In the photo at left, cedar wood has been used on the right-hand side and Japanese cypress has been used on the left. Even a change in the color of the wood can make a big difference in terms of overall impression.
The next photo at left shows a variety of shapes and patterns. These are examples of the basic patterns used but many others are possible such as ones involving the use of curved pieces. By utilizing different shapes a wide variety of arrangements can be realized.
